If a fort consisting of nothing more than earthworks is forgotten for over one hundred year, what would you expect to happen to it?
Well, for Fort Defiance in Clarksville, TN, the answer was to be resurrected like a phoenix from ashes. Defiance lay abandoned on private property from the end of the Civil War until being given to the city in 1982, and even after it landed in the hands of city officials it would take another twenty years to finally have any action taken to do anything with the land. Now, a little piece of history has been given new life and several generations can finally learn a little more about their heritage.
